On researching mermaids, I found it interesting to discover that many cultures around the world had their own unique perception of how a mermaid looked, with some similarities, such as possessing combs and mirrors. Throughout the years, as mariners sailed the world, the European legend of mermaids spread and merged, in some instances, with the local beliefs of water spirits that were half woman and half fish.

I developed an interest in mermaids,as a child in Europe, by reading the classic tale of "The Little Mermaid", by Hans Chrisitian Andersen. It was the oft-told tale of the beautiful half woman, half fish mystical creature who loves a sailor from far-off and one day saves him from ship-wreck. As she nurtures him back to health, she comes to the realization that she must decide between being a woman on land with the man she loves, leaving all that she has known and life everlasting, or continuing in her lonely existance beneath the sea.
